Fing is designed to be private by default.
- No account required.
- No app telemetry or app analytics.
- Basic, cookie-free website analytics only.
- Your audio and transcripts never leave your device.
- Speech transcription runs locally using Whisper.
- Your microphone is active only while holding the hotkey or testing the mic.
- Transcript history is stored locally and auto-cleared after 30 days; you can disable it in settings.

What the App Processes
Audio
For dictation, your microphone is active only while you hold the hotkey. Fing may also access the microphone when you run the microphone test. Audio is processed locally on your device using Whisper. It is not uploaded anywhere — not to our servers, a cloud transcription service, or any third-party API. Fing does not store raw audio after transcription.
Transcripts
Fing converts your speech to text and pastes it into the active app, or makes it available to copy. Transcribed text stays on your device unless you choose to paste, copy, or share it yourself.
If transcript history is turned on, Fing stores transcripts locally so you can search and reuse them. You can turn it off during setup or later in settings, and it is automatically cleared after 30 days.
Settings and Dictionary Terms
Fing stores local settings such as your hotkey, language preferences, model selection, appearance, and custom dictionary terms. These are stored on your device and are never sent to us.
Network Connections
Fing does not use the network for transcription, app telemetry, advertising, or app analytics. It may make limited network connections for the following purposes:
Model Downloads
During setup, or when you choose to download a speech model, Fing downloads model files from third-party hosting providers such as Hugging Face. Those providers may receive standard technical information including your IP address, user agent, and request metadata, subject to their own privacy policies.
App Updates
After setup, Fing may automatically check GitHub Releases for updates, and you can also check manually. GitHub may receive standard technical information such as your IP address and user agent.
Website
When you visit https://getfing.com, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes standard server logs such as IP address and browser type for security and delivery. We also use Glance, an open-source, self-hosted analytics tool, for basic website statistics. It sets no cookies and does not store IP addresses. No advertising trackers, session replay, or marketing pixels.
What We Do Not Collect
We do not collect:
- Audio recordings
- Transcripts
- Keystrokes or clipboard contents
- Custom dictionary terms
- App telemetry or app usage analytics
- Advertising identifiers or location data
- Account credentials or payment information
Fing has no user accounts.
Data Sharing
We do not sell personal information. We do not share your audio, transcripts, dictionary terms, or local settings with third parties.
Limited technical data may be incidentally processed by third-party providers when you interact with their infrastructure: Cloudflare (website delivery), GitHub (releases and updates), and Hugging Face or similar providers (model downloads). Each operates under its own privacy policy.
Legal Bases for Processing
Where laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on legitimate interests to deliver the website, maintain security, understand basic website usage, and provide software updates, and on your choice when you enable optional features such as local transcript history.
Data Retention
Fing stores app data locally on your device for as long as needed to provide the app's features. Optional transcript history is automatically cleared after 30 days. You can delete local app data by clearing history in the app, or by removing Fing's application data from your device.
Website logs and analytics are retained for a limited period.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information. Because Fing is designed not to collect your audio, transcripts, or app usage data on our servers, we typically do not hold that data ourselves.
You can control your data directly by:
- Disabling or clearing transcript history in the app
- Deleting custom dictionary terms
- Uninstalling the app and removing its local data from your device

Children's Privacy
Fing is not directed to children under 13, or the minimum age required by law in your country. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and publish the new version on this page.
